Puoliakseleiden, often translated as half-shafts or drive shafts, are essential components in most vehicles' drivetrains. Their primary function is to transmit rotational power from the differential to the wheels. In front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, these shafts are critical for powering the front wheels, while in rear-wheel-drive vehicles, they are responsible for powering the rear wheels.

A typical puoliakseli consists of a shaft with constant velocity (CV) joints at each end. These CV joints are crucial because they allow for the transmission of power at varying angles and distances. This flexibility is necessary to accommodate the suspension's movement and the steering angle of the wheels. The CV joints themselves are complex assemblies that require proper lubrication and protection from the elements, usually enclosed in a rubber boot filled with grease. Maintenance often involves inspecting these boots for tears or leaks.
