Pulljärjestelmän, often translated as "pull system," is a production and inventory management strategy where downstream activities signal their needs to upstream activities. Instead of producing goods based on a predetermined schedule or forecast (a push system), production is triggered by actual demand. This means that materials or components are only produced or moved when the next stage in the process requires them.

The core principle of a pull system is to minimize work-in-progress (WIP) inventory and reduce lead times. By producing only what is needed, when it is needed, companies can avoid overproduction, which is a major source of waste in traditional manufacturing. This approach is a fundamental element of Lean manufacturing and is often implemented using Kanban cards or electronic signals to communicate demand.

Key benefits of a pull system include reduced inventory costs, improved product quality due to faster feedback loops, greater flexibility in responding to changes in customer demand, and increased efficiency. However, implementing a pull system requires a high degree of coordination and communication across the supply chain. It also relies on reliable upstream processes and stable demand, or the ability to adapt quickly to fluctuations. When successful, a pull system leads to a smoother, more responsive, and cost-effective production flow.
