Types include scholarly publications (journal articles, conference proceedings, monographs, theses), official publications (government reports, policy white papers, standards), and media publications (books, magazines, newspapers, online content). Creative works such as novels and art catalogs are also publications.

Publication process: In academic contexts, manuscripts are prepared, submitted to journals or conferences, evaluated by editors and peers, revised, and eventually published with accompanying metadata (authors, title, year, DOI, ISBN/ISSN).

Access and licensing: Rights are typically held by authors or publishers. Access ranges from paywalled to open access. Open licensing (for example, Creative Commons) enables reuse under specified terms.

Metadata and indexing: Publications are described by metadata and indexed in bibliographic databases. Persistent identifiers such as DOIs and ISBNs aid discovery and citation in libraries and search engines.

Impact and ethics: Citation counts and alternative metrics assess influence; ethical standards address authorship, plagiarism, duplicate publication, and conflicts of interest.

History and trends: The shift from print to digital distribution, the rise of preprint servers, and the open access movement have reshaped publication practices, metadata standards, and preservation strategies.
