These reptiles are notable for their elongated, paddle-like limbs, which suggest an adaptation for swimming in open marine environments. Fossil remains of *Pterolepis* have been discovered primarily in Europe, particularly in the Dolomites of Italy and the Muschelkalk formation of Germany.
