Psüühiaanalüüsiga, more commonly known as psychoanalysis, is a therapeutic method developed by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century. It is both a theory of personality and a method of psychotherapy aimed at exploring the unconscious mind and its influence on conscious behavior and emotions. The core idea is that many psychological problems stem from unresolved conflicts and repressed emotions residing in the unconscious.

The primary technique in psychoanalysis is free association, where patients are encouraged to speak freely about whatever comes to mind, without censorship. This process is believed to reveal hidden thoughts, desires, and memories. Another key element is dream analysis, as Freud considered dreams to be the "royal road to the unconscious." The therapist interprets the manifest content (the dream as remembered) to uncover the latent content (the hidden symbolic meaning).

Transference, the redirection of feelings from one person to another, is also a crucial aspect. Patients often project their early relationships and emotions onto the analyst. Understanding and working through transference is seen as a vital part of the healing process. The goal of psychoanalysis is to bring unconscious material into conscious awareness, allowing individuals to gain insight into their patterns of behavior, resolve internal conflicts, and achieve greater psychological well-being. This process is typically long-term and involves frequent sessions. While psychoanalysis has evolved significantly since Freud's time, its fundamental principles continue to influence various schools of psychotherapy.
