The term encompasses a range of compounds with diverse chemical structures and origins.

Chemical classes commonly associated with psühhootilistes include classic psychedelics such as LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), psilocybin-containing mushrooms, and mescaline; as well as tryptamines like DMT and many synthetic analogs, and certain phenethylamines. Despite their differences, many of these substances share a common mechanism involving serotonin 2A receptor agonism, which is linked to their characteristic perceptual and cognitive effects.
