Pseudofraktúry

Pseudofraktúry, also known as pseudofractures or Looser's zones, are radiolucent lines seen on X-rays that mimic bone fractures but are not true breaks in the bone. They typically appear as slender, symmetrical lines perpendicular to the bone surface. These findings are most commonly associated with osteomalacia, a condition characterized by inadequate mineralization of bone, which can be caused by vitamin D deficiency or certain metabolic disorders. Pseudofraktúry can also be seen in other conditions that affect bone metabolism, such as rickets in children, renal osteodystrophy, and osteoporosis.

The pathogenesis of pseudofraktúry is thought to involve a failure of normal bone remodeling and repair. In osteomalacia, the unmineralized osteoid accumulates, weakening the bone. Stress on these weakened areas can lead to microfractures that fail to heal properly, resulting in the characteristic radiolucent lines. The symmetrical nature of pseudofraktúry is often due to repeated mechanical stress on similar locations. Common sites for pseudofraktúry include the pelvis, femur, ribs, and scapula. While they resemble fractures, they are generally painless and do not cause significant displacement. Diagnosis is made through radiographic examination, and treatment focuses on addressing the underlying metabolic cause, such as vitamin D supplementation.
