Pseudarthrose

Pseudarthrosis, also known as nonunion or delayed union, is a condition in which a fractured bone fails to heal properly. This results in the formation of a fibrous tissue connection between the broken ends of the bone, rather than a strong, stable bone union. Pseudarthrosis can occur in any bone but is most commonly seen in the long bones of the legs, such as the femur and tibia.

The exact cause of pseudarthrosis is not always clear, but it can be attributed to various factors including poor blood supply to the fracture site, infection, excessive movement at the fracture site, or the presence of certain medical conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis. In some cases, pseudarthrosis may be the result of a surgical error or improper fixation of the fracture.

The diagnosis of pseudarthrosis typically involves a combination of imaging studies, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI, to assess the extent of the fracture and the quality of the healing process. In some cases, a bone scan may be used to identify areas of increased blood flow or inflammation at the fracture site.

Treatment for pseudarthrosis may include rest, immobilization, or the use of a cast or brace to stabilize the affected area. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the fibrous tissue and promote the formation of new bone. This may involve the use of bone grafts, plates, screws, or other devices to stabilize the fracture and facilitate healing.

Pseudarthrosis can lead to significant pain, stiffness, and functional impairment, particularly in the lower extremities. It can also increase the risk of further complications, such as joint deformity, arthritis, or infection. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent these complications and promote a full recovery.
