Prøvematrise

Prøvematrise, a Danish term meaning “test matrix,” is a matrix used to organize sample observations or experimental factors for statistical analysis. In statistics and experimental design, a prøvematrise stores data collected from trials or surveys with each row representing an observation (or trial) and each column representing a variable, factor level, or measurement. The matrix may include both predictor variables and response variables, and it is often used as the basis for further analysis.

Structure and construction: A prøvematrise is typically rectangular, with dimensions corresponding to the number of observations and the number of variables. Variables can be quantitative (numbers) or qualitative (coded numerically, for example). In design of experiments, the matrix can encode factor levels, including replicated runs and blocking information to control variability. Proper coding (such as -1/1 for factors) can simplify subsequent analysis, especially for linear models and regression.

Common uses: In design of experiments (DOE), prøvematriser are used to represent factorial and fractional factorial designs, ensuring systematic coverage of factor combinations. In data analysis, the matrix is often referred to as a data matrix or design matrix, and it serves as input for statistical methods such as linear regression, analysis of variance, and multivariate techniques. The design matrix may be augmented with a column of ones to accommodate the intercept term in models.

Practical notes: Constructing a correct prøvematrise requires careful planning of experimental factors, levels, and randomization to avoid bias.
