Pruunikashallikas is a term originating from Estonian, roughly translating to "brown-grey spring" or "brown-grey source". It refers to a type of natural spring characterized by its brownish-grey mineral content, often due to the presence of iron compounds or other dissolved substances that precipitate out upon contact with air. These springs are not a distinct geological formation but rather a description of water emanating from the ground that has a particular visual appearance.

The coloration in pruunikashallikas springs is typically caused by dissolved iron (ferrous iron) in the groundwater. When this water reaches the surface and is exposed to oxygen, the iron oxidizes and forms iron oxides and hydroxides, which are insoluble and settle out as a reddish-brown or yellowish-brown sediment.
