Proxytunnukset, often referred to as proxy tunnels or simply tunnels, are a network security technique that involves encapsulating network traffic within another network protocol. This is typically done to circumvent network restrictions, enhance privacy, or secure communications. A proxy server acts as an intermediary, receiving requests from a client and forwarding them to the destination server. In a tunnel, this proxy relationship is extended to carry the original traffic within a new, often encrypted, layer.

The primary function of a proxytunnel is to create a secure and private pathway between two points on a network, even if intermediate networks are untrusted or actively blocking the original traffic. This is commonly achieved using protocols like SSH (Secure Shell) for tunneling, which encrypts the data and disguises it as standard SSH traffic. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) also employ similar tunneling principles to create secure connections over public networks.

Proxytunnels are utilized in various scenarios. For example, they can bypass firewalls that block access to specific websites or services by routing the traffic through a proxy server located in a network without such restrictions. They can also be used to encrypt sensitive data transmitted over unsecured Wi-Fi networks, protecting it from eavesdropping. Furthermore, some users employ proxytunnels for anonymity, masking their IP address and online activities from their Internet Service Provider (ISP) or other network observers. The effectiveness and security of a proxytunnel depend on the underlying protocols used for encapsulation and encryption.
