Proxyediting

ProxyEditing is a workflow in digital media production where editors work with lower-resolution proxy copies of source media to perform the edit, while preserving the ability to relink to the original high-resolution files for final export. Proxies are generated from the master assets and stored alongside the project, often in a dedicated proxy folder or within the project itself. They are designed to preserve timing, in/out points, and audio synchronization so edits made on proxies transfer cleanly to the full-resolution media.

In practice, proxies enable smoother playback and faster scrubbing on hardware that may struggle with high-resolution files. Editing software creates proxy versions at a reduced frame size and bitrate, sometimes using a different codec such as ProRes Proxy or DNxHR Quad HD. The editor works exclusively with these proxies, while the project maintains references to the original media. When the edit is completed, the project relinks to the high-resolution files for conforming, color grading, effects, and final rendering.

Relinking and conforming are key steps. The software re-associates the edit decisions, media, and timing with the original files, ensuring color management, LUTs, and audio remain consistent. Potential challenges include ensuring accurate relink, avoiding drift in timecodes, and managing proxy quality to prevent visible discrepancies during export.

Applications of ProxyEditing include large-format footage, collaborative workflows over limited networks, and projects with limited workstation performance. It is supported by major nonlinear editors and is widely used to improve efficiency without sacrificing final output quality.
