Protuzavanja, commonly known as "counterplay" or "counterplay tactics," refers to strategic responses employed in various competitive contexts, most notably in chess, board games, and sports. The term originates from the Slavic languages and is derived from the verb *protuzavesti*, meaning "to counter" or "to oppose." In chess, protuzavanja encompasses a set of defensive and offensive maneuvers designed to neutralize an opponent's advantages, disrupt their plans, or regain initiative.

The concept is rooted in the principle of dynamic equality, where players aim to maintain balance even when facing superior material or positional advantages. Protuzavanja often involves techniques like pawn breaks, piece maneuvers, or tactical sacrifices to force the opponent into unfavorable positions.
