In this model, a prototype object serves as a template from which new objects are created. When a new object is instantiated, it is essentially a copy of the prototype, and it can then have its own properties and methods added or modified.

This contrasts with class-based programming, where objects are instances of a class, and inheritance occurs through a hierarchy of classes. In prototype-based systems, the relationships between objects are more direct. If an object needs to access a property or method that it doesn't have directly, it looks for it in its prototype. This lookup process can cascade up a chain of prototypes until the property or method is found or the chain ends.

JavaScript is a prominent example of a language that utilizes prototype-based inheritance. In JavaScript, every object has an internal `[[Prototype]]` property that points to another object. When you try to access a property or method on an object, JavaScript follows this prototype chain. This mechanism allows for flexible and dynamic object creation and modification.
