Protonigradientin

Protonigradientin is a hypothetical molecule used in theoretical discussions of cellular energy metabolism to describe a compound that can modulate the proton gradient across biological membranes, i.e., the proton motive force that drives ATP synthesis. The concept appears in models and thought experiments as a way to explore how altering the gradient’s magnitude or stability might affect chemiosmotic coupling in mitochondria, chloroplasts, or bacterial membranes.

In proposed characterizations, protonigradientin would be a lipophilic amphipathic molecule with a functional group capable of reversible proton binding and partitioning into the lipid bilayer.
