Protoculture

In popular culture and science fiction, protoculture is commonly used to denote a central energy resource or currency that powers advanced technology. The term is most closely associated with the StarCraft universe, where protoculture is described as the Protoss’ primary energy source that drives their weapons, ships, and psionic devices. Within that fictional setting, protoculture underpins Protoss industry and civilization, functioning as both a power supply and a cultural cornerstone.

In anthropology and archaeology, protoculture (often rendered proto-culture or proto-civilization in varying sources) refers to an inferred or hypothetical antecedent culture believed to give rise to a more clearly attested culture. It is used to describe potential precursor traits, technologies, or social structures during transitional periods. The term is not standardized and its precise meaning depends on the author, with modern scholarship frequently preferring more specific terms when describing transitional phases.
