Prosessahäiriöiden

Prosessahäiriöiden, a Finnish term, translates to "process disorders" or "disruption of processes" in English. This refers to a broad category of conditions that affect a person's ability to perform everyday tasks and engage in meaningful activities due to underlying difficulties. These difficulties are not typically related to physical strength or gross motor skills, but rather to the complex cognitive and sensory-motor skills required for goal-directed behavior.

These disorders can manifest in various ways, impacting areas such as planning, sequencing, organization, attention, sensory processing, and motor control at a fine or perceptual level. For example, an individual with a process disorder might struggle with tasks like dressing, preparing a meal, managing time, or completing schoolwork, even if they have the physical capacity to do so. Sensory processing challenges, where the brain has difficulty interpreting and responding to sensory information, are often a key component. This can lead to over- or under-responsivity to sights, sounds, touch, taste, smell, or movement, further complicating participation in daily activities.

The underlying causes of process disorders can be diverse, including developmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or specific learning disabilities. They can also arise from acquired neurological conditions like brain injury or stroke. Diagnosis and intervention often involve occupational therapists who can assess the specific nature of the processing difficulties and develop tailored strategies to improve functional independence and quality of life.
