One of the primary uses of propylenglykol is as a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture. This property makes it a common ingredient in cosmetics, skincare products, and personal care items like lotions, shampoos, and deodorants. It helps to prevent products from drying out and keeps skin hydrated. In the food industry, it is used as a solvent for flavors and colors, and as a food additive (E1520) to help maintain texture and moisture in certain processed foods.

Propylenglykol also serves as a de-icing fluid for aircraft and runways due to its low freezing point. It is a key component in the production of unsaturated polyester resins, which are used in fiberglass-reinforced plastics. Additionally, it finds application in e-cigarette liquids as a carrier for nicotine and flavorings. While generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by regulatory bodies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for many applications, ingestion of very large quantities can lead to adverse effects.
