Propertiesrigidity

Propertiesrigidity is a conceptual measure used in several disciplines to describe how resilient a set of properties of a system is to perturbations or transformations. It captures the idea that some properties remain essentially unchanged when the system undergoes certain allowed changes, while others may vary more readily.

Formally, let S be a system with a property vector P = {p1, p2, ..., pn} and let T be a class of admissible transformations acting on S. For a transformation t in T, denote P(t) as the property vector after applying t. The propertiesrigidity R(S, T) is defined as the expected fraction of properties that are invariant under t, i.e., the average over t of the indicator that pi = pi(t) across i. Equivalently, R ∈ [0,1], with R = 1 indicating all properties are invariant under all T, and R = 0 indicating that almost all properties can change under some admissible transformation. In practice, one may weight transformations by probability or consider specific perturbation models.

In geometry and structural analysis, rigidity traditionally deals with fixed relations like distances. Propertiesrigidity generalizes this to a broader set of properties, including topology, symmetry, or statistical descriptors, and to a broader class of transformations beyond rigid motions.

In materials science, propertiesrigidity helps distinguish between rigid frameworks and flexible materials. In network design, it measures how robust node attributes are to rewiring or attack. In software engineering, it can quantify how much behavior is preserved under refactoring or optimization that should maintain external interfaces.

Because it depends on the chosen property set and transformation class, propertiesrigidity is inherently contextual and may not yield a unique scalar value for a system.
