Prognostísk

Prognostísk is an adjective used to describe things relating to prognosis—the expected course and outcome of a disease or other condition. In clinical and research contexts, the term denotes information, methods, or judgments that aim to predict future events, such as survival, progression, or response to treatment.

Etymology: The word derives from Latin prognosticus, via Greek prognostikos, with the suffix -isk forming adjectives in several languages to mean 'pertaining to.'

Usage: Prognostísk factors are variables linked to outcomes, for example age, disease stage, biological markers, or functional status. Prognostísk models or scores combine multiple factors to estimate probabilities of outcomes and support decision-making and counseling. The accuracy of prognostísk assessments depends on study design, population, and data quality, and they are updated as new evidence emerges.

In other fields that study future events, similar prognostic concepts appear under different terms, but the core idea remains predicting likely results to guide actions and resource allocation.
