Profundity refers to the quality of being profound: having deep insight, significance, or complexity. The term can describe thoughts, arguments, or artistic expressions that reveal substantial, often non-obvious meaning. Its etymology traces to the Latin profundus, meaning deep or bottom, and in English it has long conveyed a sense of intellectual weight, moral seriousness, or cosmic scale.

In philosophy and theory, profundity is associated with fundamental or essential aspects of a subject, offering principles or connections that illuminate underlying structures rather than surface features. In aesthetics, works deemed profound are expected to yield new understanding upon reflection and to resonate beyond immediate impression. In criticism and rhetoric, profundity may be praised when ideas are lucid and integrative, but it can be criticized as obscure or pretentious if opacity is used to confer authority rather than to illuminate.

Depth and profundity are related but not identical: depth often refers to thoroughness, scope, or complexity, while profundity emphasizes significance, insight, and resonance. Some scholars distinguish analytic profundity (clear, well-structured reasoning) from existential profundity (meaning, value, human concern).
