There are several categories of profilometry methods, broadly divided into contact and non-contact techniques. Contact profilometry involves a physical probe that traces the surface. While this method can provide high vertical resolution, it can also scratch or damage delicate surfaces.

Non-contact profilometry uses optical or electronic principles to measure surface height without touching it. Optical methods include interferometry, confocal microscopy, and focus variation microscopy. Interferometry, for example, uses the interference of light waves to create a highly accurate 3D map of the surface. Confocal microscopy uses a pinhole aperture to reject out-of-focus light, leading to improved lateral and axial resolution. Focus variation microscopy analyzes the depth of field at different focus points to reconstruct the surface topography. Electronic methods, such as capacitance profilometry, use changes in capacitance to determine the distance between a probe and the surface. The choice of method depends on factors like the required resolution, the nature of the surface being measured, and the potential for surface damage.
