Produktionsställen, or production sites, refer to defined physical locations where goods are manufactured, processed, or assembled. A production site may encompass factories, plants, workshops, or processing facilities, together with the necessary supporting infrastructure to operate.

A site includes buildings, production equipment, utilities, storage areas, and information systems that control processes and quality. Layout and material flow influence efficiency, safety, and energy use, while maintenance, facilities management, and IT systems are essential for reliable operations. The site also interacts with suppliers, customers, and internal functions such as planning, logistics, and quality assurance.

There are different production system types that can define a site’s characteristics. Discrete manufacturing sites produce individual items or assemblies; process manufacturing sites handle bulk materials and continuous or batch processing; hybrid sites combine elements of both. Production sites can operate as standalone units or form part of a broader multi-site network with centralized planning and shared services.

Management considerations at production sites include capacity planning, scheduling, and production control, along with quality management, safety, and environmental compliance. Common standards referenced include ISO 9001 for quality and ISO 14001 for environmental management, as well as industry-specific regulations. Key performance metrics often focus on efficiency, such as overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), throughput, and defect rates.
