Productformuleringen refers to the planned composition of a product, including the ingredients used, their amounts, and the processes required to manufacture it. The formulation defines the desired properties and performance, such as efficacy, texture, stability, and safety.

Applications span multiple sectors, most notably cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, and chemical products. Each sector uses its own terminology, documentation, and regulatory framework to ensure quality and compliance.

Key elements of a formulation include an ingredients list with appropriate nomenclature (for example INCI names in cosmetics), as well as active ingredients, additives, solvents, stabilizers, and preservatives. The formulation specifies ingredient concentrations, the order of addition, and manufacturing parameters such as mixing, temperature, and processing time. Supporting documents include specifications, supplier certificates, and batch records.

Development typically follows several stages: concept and selection of candidate ingredients, screening and screening tests, laboratory formulation and stability assessments, compatibility testing, and microbiological safety analysis. Scale-up to production involves process validation and the creation of batch documentation and control plans. Sensory attributes or organoleptic properties may be evaluated for consumer products.

Regulatory and safety considerations vary by jurisdiction but generally require safety assessments, correct labeling, and compliance with ingredient restrictions and reporting obligations. In the EU, examples include cosmetics regulations and REACH, while food and pharmaceuticals have their own regimes.

Documentation and intellectual property play a central role, with formulation dossiers, change control, supplier certificates, and records supporting traceability. Formulations also engage quality assurance, shelf-life planning, and considerations of sustainability, including substitution of hazardous substances and packaging impacts.
