Proctortesztet

Proctortesztet is a diagnostic procedure used in proctology to assess the function and sensation of the rectum and anal canal. The test is not a single technique but a set of complementary methods that together evaluate sphincter integrity, rectal sensation, and defecation dynamics. It is employed to aid the diagnosis of disorders affecting continence, defecation, and pelvic floor function.

Indications commonly include fecal incontinence, chronic constipation with suspected dyssynergia or pelvic floor dysfunction, anorectal pain, hemorrhoids or fissures, and the preoperative or postoperative assessment of anorectal surgery candidates.

Core components often include anorectal manometry to measure resting and squeeze anal pressures and rectal sensory thresholds; digital rectal examination to assess tone and reflexes; and imaging-based assessments such as defecography or MRI defecography to visualize defecation. In some settings endoanal ultrasound may be used to evaluate the sphincter musculature.

The procedure is performed by trained clinicians, usually with the patient in a left lateral or occasionally lithotomy position. After informed consent and lubrication, a small flexible catheter or balloon system is inserted per anum to record pressures and provoke sensory responses. Results are interpreted to identify sphincter weakness, coordination problems, reduced rectal sensation, or structural abnormalities, guiding treatment decisions such as biofeedback therapy or surgical planning.

Risks are generally minor, including transient discomfort or minor bleeding if hemorrhoids or fissures are present; serious complications are rare. The test results should be interpreted in the context of clinical symptoms and other investigations.
