Probenkippung

Probenkippung is a laboratory sampling technique used to obtain representative subsamples by tilting a sample container in a controlled manner. The method relies on the physical behavior of the material in the container—suspensions, powders or granular solids may segregate, settle, or be displaced when the container is inclined, and a defined portion can be collected after tilting. It is commonly applied in environmental analysis (water, soil, sediments), in food and beverage quality control, and in geological or materials testing, where a single grab sample may be biased by stratification or settling.

Procedure: a defined container and tilting device are used. The tilt angle, pace, and duration are specified in a sampling plan according to material properties and analytical requirements. After tilting, a subsample is taken from the designated zone—often the middle portion or the layer formed during tilting—using a clean utensil or pipette. To avoid bias, multiple tilts or sequential subsampling may be performed, and results are typically reported with the sampling method and any phase separation described. If homogenization is required, tilting is followed by thorough mixing before final sampling.

Limitations and safety: improper tilting can cause cross-contamination, loss of material, or altered composition due to selective displacement. The method should be documented, and operators should use appropriate personal protective equipment and maintain clean containers to ensure traceability.
