Pricevolume

Pricevolume refers to data that combines price and trading volume for a financial instrument over a period. In practice, pricevolume analysis examines how price changes relate to the level and changes in volume, using the two series together to interpret market participation and potential future moves. Price data (such as open, high, low, close) provides information about price trends, while volume data reflects the amount of trading activity and liquidity. Analysts look for patterns such as price advances on rising volume as a sign of buying interest, or price declines on high volume as a sign of strong selling pressure; divergences, where price moves but volume does not, can be interpreted as caution signals.

Common applications include charting price alongside volume, and implementing indicators that formalize the relationship, such as Volume-Price Trend, On-Balance Volume, and price-volume based oscillators; trading systems may also incorporate VWAP (volume-weighted average price) for intraday benchmarks. Pricevolume data can be used in technical analysis, event studies, and backtesting.

Limitations include differences in market structure and liquidity across assets and venues, potential data quality issues, and the possibility that volume spikes are driven by non-informational factors (rebalancing, systematic trading).
