Pressosta

Pressosta is a term used in some languages to refer to a device that detects pressure and actuates an electrical switch in response to that pressure. It is commonly known in English as a pressure switch. Pressostas are used to control equipment and protect systems by turning electrical circuits on or off when specific pressure conditions are reached.

A pressosta typically comprises a sensing element and a switch mechanism. The sensing element can be a diaphragm, bellows, or piston that responds to fluid or gas pressure. The movement of the sensing element actuates electrical contacts, which are usually configured as normally open (NO), normally closed (NC), or both (SPDT). Some pressostas are purely mechanical, while others integrate electronic components to provide programmable setpoints, hysteresis, and status outputs.

There are several main types of pressostas. Gauge pressure switches respond to relative pressure, absolute pressure switches measure against a vacuum reference, and differential pressure switches monitor the difference between two ports. Electronic variants may offer adjustable or programmable setpoints, multiple output signals, and diagnostic capabilities.

Applications of pressostas are widespread and include HVAC systems, water pumps and tanks, boilers and steam systems, compressors, industrial automation, and safety interlocks. They are chosen based on pressure range, media compatibility, environmental conditions, and electrical requirements.

Selection and use considerations include the operating pressure range, media compatibility, temperature limits, and environmental protection (such as IP ratings). Electrical ratings (voltage and current), output configuration (NO/NC/SPDT), and the presence of hysteresis or deadband are also important. Proper installation, calibration, and periodic testing are recommended to ensure reliable operation.
