Prespotting

Prespotting, also written pre-spotting, is a preparatory stain-removal step used in textile cleaning operations, particularly in professional dry cleaning and laundry services. It entails applying a targeted spotting solution to a specific stain before the main cleaning cycle in order to loosen, dissolve, or suspend the stain so it can be removed more effectively later.

The process begins with stain assessment and fabric identification to select an appropriate spotter. Technicians apply the solution with a cloth, brush, or sponge and work it gently into the stain, sometimes using controlled agitation. After treatment, the fabric may be left to dwell for a short period before proceeding to the standard cleaning cycle. A blotting step is often used to remove loosened material, and a colorfastness test may be performed to prevent damage to sensitive fabrics.

Materials used in prespotting vary by stain type and fabric. Common categories include hydrocarbon solvents for oil-based stains, aqueous enzymatic or alkaline formulations for protein stains, and solvent-based or citrus-based products for dye-related or particulate stains. The choice of solvent considers fabric type, colorfastness, and the potential for setting or shadowing after cleaning. Equipment typically includes spotting boards or tables, applicators, and ventilation appropriate for solvent use.

Prespotting is considered a standard practice in many professional cleaning operations, designed to improve stain removal outcomes and reduce the likelihood of setting stains during washing. It is not universally required for all garments; some fabrics or stains may respond better to alternative methods or may require specialized treatment. Safety and fabric-care guidelines are followed to minimize risks to workers and fabric integrity.
