Preferenssijärjestelmä

Preferenssijärjestelmä, often translated as a preference system or voting system, refers to a method by which voters express their choices in an election. Instead of simply marking a single candidate, voters rank candidates in order of preference. This means a voter might indicate their first choice, second choice, third choice, and so on. The primary goal of such systems is to capture a more nuanced expression of voter intent compared to traditional plurality voting.

There are various types of preferenssijärjestelmä. The most common include the Instant-runoff voting (IRV), also known as ranked-choice voting (RCV) in some contexts, and various forms of proportional representation that use ranked ballots. In IRV, if no candidate receives a majority of first-preference votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed based on the voters' next preferences. This process continues until one candidate achieves a majority. Proportional representation systems using ranked ballots aim to allocate seats in a legislature in proportion to the votes received by parties or candidates, with rankings used to determine which candidates are elected within those allocations.

The adoption of preferenssijärjestelmä is often driven by a desire to reduce the impact of "spoiler" candidates, encourage more positive campaigning, and elect candidates who have broader support among the electorate. Critics, however, may raise concerns about the complexity of the counting process and the potential for voters to misunderstand how their preferences are translated into outcomes.
