Preedintele

Preedintele is the Romanian word for president. It refers to the head of state in a republic. In Romania, the president is elected by popular vote for a five-year term, with a limit of two terms. The president's role is primarily representative, serving as a symbol of the state and a guarantor of national independence, territorial integrity, and the proper functioning of public institutions.

The president promulgates laws, can request the reconsideration of laws, appoints and dismisses the prime minister and other members of the government, and presides over the Supreme Council of National Defence. The president also represents Romania in foreign relations, accredits and recalls diplomatic representatives, and ratifies international treaties. In times of exceptional circumstances, such as war or natural disaster, the president can declare a state of siege or state of emergency.

The president is assisted by a consultative body, the Presidential Administration, and can issue decrees. The president's powers are defined by the Constitution of Romania. The current president of Romania is Klaus Iohannis. The office of the president was established following the Romanian Revolution of 1989, succeeding the role of General Secretary of the Romanian Communist Party.
