Predstavený

Predstavený is a Slovak term that derives from the verb predstaviť, meaning to present or introduce. In its base form it functions as an adjective in the past passive participle, and as a masculine noun meaning “the one who has been presented.” In religious contexts, predstavený has a specialized meaning: it denotes the head or superior of a religious community, and is often translated into English as abbott, abbess, or superior, depending on the tradition.

In the context of monastic and canonical orders, the predstavený is the person who governs the community. The role includes spiritual leadership, administration, discipline, and external representation for the house or order. Appointment methods vary by community; typically the superior is elected by members of the monastery or convent, sometimes with confirmation by a higher church authority such as a bishop or the governing body of the order.

The feminine form is predstavená, used for female superiors. The term is commonly used in Slovak-speaking parts of the Catholic Church and in historical contexts tied to Slavic monastic traditions.
