Techniques such as powder bed fusion and binder jetting rely on fine particles that fuse under heat or binders. Key properties include particle size distribution, shape, flowability, density, and cohesion, which influence density, mechanical strength, and surface finish. Powder characteristics determine processability and end-use performance across metals, ceramics, and polymers.

Coatings and cosmetics also use powder-based approaches. Powder coatings apply dry resinous powders electrostatically and cure to form durable finishes with minimal solvent use. Cosmetic powders mix pigments and carriers to provide texture, coverage, and specific visual effects.

Processing and handling require milling, classification, blending, and careful packaging. Moisture control and safe handling of fine powders are essential to performance and worker safety. Regulatory and quality considerations include standards for particle size analysis, purity, flow, and batch consistency in pharmaceuticals, as well as labeling and safety requirements in consumer products.
