Postfiltered

Postfiltered refers to data or signals that have undergone an additional filtering stage after an initial processing step. In signal processing and communications, post-filtering is applied to reduce residual noise, suppress artifacts introduced by compression or transmission, or to shape the frequency content of a signal once the primary algorithm has completed.

Common domains for post-filtering include audio processing, image and video processing, and communication systems. In audio and speech applications, a post-filter may follow a noise reduction or echo cancellation stage to further suppress remaining noise and improve perceptual quality while attempting to preserve natural timbre. In image and video processing, post-filtering can be used to reduce compression artifacts or to smooth temporal or spatial inconsistencies introduced by primary coding or enhancement steps. In communications, post-filtering can help mitigate residual interference or ripple after demodulation and equalization.
