Postcritics

Postcritics refers to a broad and diverse set of theoretical approaches that emerged in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These approaches build upon, critique, and extend the insights of critical theory, particularly the Frankfurt School, while also engaging with post-structuralism, post-modernism, and other contemporary philosophical and social movements. The term "postcritical" suggests a move beyond certain foundational assumptions or methodologies associated with earlier critical thought.

One of the key concerns of postcritical thought is the nature of critique itself. While traditional critical theory often aimed at revealing hidden power structures and advocating for emancipation, postcritical thinkers question whether such a project is still viable or desirable in the contemporary world. Some postcritical perspectives explore the limitations of grand narratives and universal reason, highlighting the complexities and contingencies of social and political realities. They may incorporate insights from post-structuralist analyses of discourse and power, examining how subjects are constituted through social and linguistic practices. There is also an increased emphasis on the role of affect, emotion, and the body in understanding social phenomena. Furthermore, postcritical thought tends to be more self-reflexive about the positionality of the critic and the ethical implications of critical engagement. The diverse strands of postcritical thought continue to evolve, offering new frameworks for understanding and navigating the challenges of the present.
