Postblending

Postblending is a term used in media production to describe the process of blending multiple components after the primary production stage to create a cohesive final result. It encompasses combining inputs such as images, color data, audio tracks, or CGI elements in post-production in order to resolve inconsistencies and enhance overall quality.

In image and video production, postblending refers to layering and merging multiple exposures, frames, or passes after capture. This often involves adjusting blending modes, applying masks, and performing color corrections to optimize dynamic range, color continuity, and visual realism. In film and television, postblending can be used to integrate computer-generated imagery with live-action footage, followed by color grading and exposure balancing to achieve a seamless composite. In printing and digital publishing, the concept may involve refining ink or color separations after the initial print run to achieve accurate tonal relationships.

Techniques commonly associated with postblending include alpha compositing, layer-based masking, tone mapping, HDR exposure fusion, and the use of calibrated color workflows and LUTs. The goal is to produce a final image or sequence that looks coherent across scenes and devices, while preserving detail in highlights and shadows and maintaining consistent color fidelity.

Challenges in postblending include avoiding visible seams, mitigating artifacts from misalignment or mismatched color spaces, and managing processing time within an existing workflow. While not universally standardized, postblending is often described as part of broader post-processing or compositing practices in professional contexts.
