Portieken
Portieken is the Dutch plural of portiek, a term used in the Netherlands and parts of Belgium to describe the entrance area of a multi-unit building. A portiek is typically a sheltered, shared access space on the ground floor that leads to a staircase or elevator lobby serving the upper apartments. Depending on the building, a portiek may be an open-air passage, a covered arcade, or a fully enclosed hallway, sometimes with glass or brick walls, a ceiling, and lighting. In many postwar apartment blocks and older urban townhouses, the portiek forms the primary public-to-private transition: street doors open into the portiek, from which residents access their individual flats, while mailboxes, intercoms, and sometimes a central stairwell are located there. Design variations range from narrow, corridor-like passages to longer galeried spaces.
