The calculation of portfolio return typically involves comparing the ending value of the portfolio to its beginning value, while accounting for any cash flows in or out of the portfolio during the period. This can be expressed as a percentage. For instance, if a portfolio starts at $10,000 and ends at $11,000 after a year, with no additional contributions or withdrawals, the portfolio return is 10%. However, if there were dividends or interest payments received, these would also be added to the ending value before calculating the percentage return.

Different types of returns can be considered when evaluating a portfolio. Total return includes all income and capital appreciation. Income return focuses solely on dividends and interest. Capital return, on the other hand, measures the change in the market value of the assets. Investors often look at both absolute returns and relative returns, comparing their portfolio's performance against a benchmark index or the performance of similar portfolios. A consistent and positive portfolio return is generally the objective of most investment strategies.
