Porositätserzeugung refers to the processes and techniques used to create voids or pores within a material. These pores can be intentional and controlled, or they can be an unintended consequence of a manufacturing process. The size, shape, distribution, and connectivity of these pores significantly influence the material's properties, such as its mechanical strength, density, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and permeability.

There are numerous methods for generating porosity, often specific to the material type and desired pore structure. For metals and ceramics, methods can include sintering processes where powder particles are heated and fuse, leaving voids between them. Gas atomization is another technique used in metal powder production where gas is used to break down molten metal into fine droplets, which can lead to porous structures upon consolidation. In polymer science, foaming agents are commonly employed. These agents decompose or evaporate under specific conditions, releasing gas that expands the polymer matrix, creating a cellular structure. Techniques like extrusion or injection molding can be combined with foaming agents. For other materials, techniques such as freeze-drying, where a solvent is removed by sublimation, can create highly porous structures. Electrospraying can also be utilized to create porous particles.

The applications of materials with controlled porosity are diverse. Porous materials are essential in filtration systems, catalysts, thermal insulation, lightweight structural components, bone implants, drug delivery systems, and energy storage devices like batteries and supercapacitors. Understanding and controlling porositätserzeugung is therefore crucial for tailoring material performance to specific technological needs.
