In a typical porous medium, the voids (pores) form a connected network connected by narrower passages (pore throats); the boundaries between these void regions and the solid matrix regulate how fluids and solutes move and are stored.

The geometry and chemistry of poriegrenzen influence key properties such as porosity, permeability, and capillarity. The curvature and roughness of pore boundaries determine capillary pressures and the ease with which fluids invade or evacuate the pore space.
