Porfyriset

Porfyriset is a term used to describe a group of porphyria disorders. Porphyrias are a rare group of inherited or acquired metabolic disorders that affect the heme biosynthesis pathway. Heme is a component of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood, and other vital proteins. When there is a deficiency in certain enzymes involved in heme production, intermediate chemicals called porphyrins can build up in the body. The specific porphyrin that accumulates and the location of this accumulation (such as the liver or red blood cells) determine the type of porphyria and its symptoms.

The symptoms of porphyria can vary widely depending on the type and severity. Some types cause neurological problems, including pain in the abdomen, chest, or limbs, confusion, seizures, and paralysis. These are often referred to as acute porphyrias. Other types primarily affect the skin, leading to increased sensitivity to sunlight, blistering, and scarring. These are known as cutaneous porphyrias. Some individuals with porphyria may experience no symptoms at all, while others can have severe and life-threatening episodes. Diagnosis typically involves blood, urine, and stool tests to measure porphyrin levels and genetic testing to identify specific enzyme deficiencies. Treatment strategies vary and may include avoiding triggers, medications to manage symptoms, and in some severe cases, heme infusions or liver transplantation.
