Porausprosessi, or the drilling process, is the sequence of operations used to create holes in solid materials by removing material with a rotating cutting tool. It is a fundamental technique in manufacturing, construction, and engineering, applicable to metals, plastics, composites, and wood. The process encompasses various drilling methods, including twist drilling, center drilling, reaming, boring, and, in the case of deep holes, specialized methods such as gun-drill and BTA drilling.

The process typically begins with planning and setup. Finishing steps may follow drilling, depending on the application. Deburring removes sharp edges, while reaming, honing, or boring can achieve tighter tolerances and better roundness. In some cases, threads are tapped or the hole is countersunk. Quality control involves measuring diameter, straightness, roundness, depth, and surface finish to ensure the hole meets specifications.
