Poqomam

Poqomam is an indigenous Mesoamerican people who primarily reside in the central highlands of Guatemala. They are part of the larger Mayan linguistic and cultural family. Poqomam is also the name of the Mayan language spoken by the Poqomam people, which belongs to the Eastern Mayan branch of the Mayan language family. Historically, the Poqomam were a significant group in the region, with their territory once extending over a considerable area.

The Poqomam culture is characterized by its distinct traditions, including agricultural practices, intricate weaving, and traditional ceremonies. Maize cultivation forms the basis of their subsistence economy, supplemented by beans, squash, and other crops. Their traditional clothing is often brightly colored and features intricate embroidery, reflecting a rich artistic heritage. Religious beliefs often blend ancient Mayan cosmology with elements of Catholicism, a common syncretism among indigenous Guatemalan communities.

In contemporary times, the Poqomam people face various socioeconomic challenges, including poverty, limited access to education and healthcare, and land issues. Despite these difficulties, they strive to preserve their cultural identity and language. Many Poqomam communities are actively engaged in cultural revitalization efforts, seeking to pass on their traditions and language to younger generations. Their resilience and commitment to their heritage are central to their ongoing story.
