Pontebbana
The Pontebbana is a historic railway line in northeastern Italy connecting the city of Udine to Tarvisio, near the Austrian border. It is also known as the Udine-Tarvisio railway. The line is named after the Pontebba, a village that was once a significant stop along the route, although the modern Pontebba station is now located in Italy, not the historically debated territory of Pontebba. Construction of the line began in the late 19th century, with the goal of facilitating trade and communication with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It opened in stages, with the full line becoming operational in 1879.
The Pontebbana traverses the mountainous region of Carnia and the Julian Alps, featuring impressive engineering feats
