Polümeriseerimisviisid refer to the different methods by which monomers link together to form polymers. These methods are crucial in determining the properties of the resulting polymer, such as its molecular weight, structure, and end-groups.

One primary classification of polymerization methods is based on the mechanism of chain growth. Chain-growth polymerization, also known as addition polymerization, involves the initiation, propagation, and termination steps. Examples include free-radical polymerization, cationic polymerization, and anionic polymerization. In free-radical polymerization, a free radical initiates the process, adding monomers sequentially to the growing chain. Cationic and anionic polymerizations involve charged species as the active centers.

Another major category is step-growth polymerization, also known as condensation polymerization. In this mechanism, monomers react with each other in a series of steps, forming dimers, trimers, and eventually long polymer chains. Unlike chain-growth polymerization, there is no distinct active center, and the molecular weight increases gradually throughout the reaction. This method often releases a small molecule, such as water or methanol, as a byproduct.

A third important method is controlled/living polymerization. These techniques allow for precise control over the molecular weight, molecular weight distribution (polydispersity), and polymer architecture. Examples include atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). These methods are vital for synthesizing polymers with specific functionalities and complex structures for advanced applications. The choice of polymerization method depends on the type of monomer, desired polymer properties, and available equipment.
