Polyurethanevaahto, commonly known as PU foam, is a versatile polymer material produced through a chemical reaction between isocyanates and polyols. This reaction creates a cellular structure, typically consisting of closed or open cells, which gives the foam its characteristic properties. The physical form of polyurethane foam can range from flexible to rigid, depending on the specific formulation and manufacturing process.

Flexible polyurethane foam is widely used in furniture upholstery, mattresses, and automotive seating due to its cushioning and comfort properties. It offers good resilience and can be manufactured in various densities and firmness levels. Rigid polyurethane foam, on the other hand, is known for its excellent thermal insulation capabilities. It is commonly found in building insulation, refrigerators, and pipe insulation, where its low thermal conductivity significantly reduces heat transfer.

The production of polyurethane foam involves mixing liquid precursors, which then expand and cure to form the solid foam. Additives such as blowing agents, catalysts, and surfactants are often incorporated to control the foaming process, cell structure, and final properties. Fire retardants can also be added to enhance the material's resistance to ignition. The versatility of polyurethane foam allows for customization to meet a broad spectrum of application requirements, making it a prevalent material across numerous industries.
