Chain-growth polymerization, also known as addition polymerization, involves the sequential addition of monomers to an active growing chain end. This process often requires an initiator to start the chain reaction. The monomers add to the chain without the loss of any atoms. Examples include the polymerization of ethylene to form polyethylene and the polymerization of vinyl chloride to form polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Step-growth polymerization, also known as condensation polymerization, involves the reaction between monomers that have at least two functional groups. These reactions typically proceed by the formation of dimers, trimers, and then larger oligomers, which eventually combine to form the high molecular weight polymer. This process often involves the elimination of a small molecule, such as water or methanol, as a byproduct. Polyesters and polyamides (like nylon) are common examples of polymers formed through step-growth polymerization.

Understanding the nuances of polymerization reactions is crucial for controlling the properties of the resulting polymers, such as their molecular weight, branching, and tacticity, which in turn dictate their physical and chemical behavior.
