Common approaches include blending polymer emulsions into cementitious matrices, grafting polymers onto surfaces, or creating interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) where two or more networks interlace without being covalently bound. In practice, these modifications are used to tailor properties such as toughness, adhesion, flexibility, permeability, and chemical resistance.

Applications span several sectors. In construction, polymer-modified concrete and polymer-modified bitumen improve adhesion, crack-bridging ability, weather resistance, and performance at varying temperatures. In coatings and adhesives, polymer modifiers enhance durability, impact resistance, and barrier properties. IPNs and surface-grafted polymers are used to tune surface energy, wetting, and bonding characteristics. Hydrogels and modified resins find use in medical devices, packaging, and protective coatings, where environmental stability and mechanical performance are important.

Advantages and limitations vary by system. Benefits typically include increased toughness, reduced permeability, improved low-temperature performance, and longer service life. Drawbacks can involve higher material costs, processing viscosity, and potential compatibility or long-term aging concerns. Selection of polymer type, molecular weight, and curing conditions is crucial to achieving the desired balance of properties for a given application.
