Polyhydroxysäuren

Polyhydroxysäuren, often abbreviated as PHAs, are a class of chemical compounds that contain multiple hydroxyl (-OH) groups. In the context of cosmetic science and dermatology, the term "Polyhydroxy Acids" specifically refers to alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) with more than two hydroxyl groups, or sometimes to sugars that are oxidized to carboxylic acids. The most commonly known and utilized PHAs in skincare are gluconolactone and lactobionic acid.

These compounds are valued for their exfoliating properties, similar to AHAs, but are generally considered gentler on the skin. This is attributed to their larger molecular size, which leads to slower penetration into the epidermis. As a result, PHAs can effectively remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover without causing the significant irritation, redness, or stinging that some individuals experience with AHAs.

Beyond exfoliation, PHAs also possess humectant properties, meaning they attract and retain moisture, contributing to improved skin hydration. Furthermore, some PHAs, like gluconolactone, exhibit antioxidant benefits, helping to protect the skin from environmental damage caused by free radicals. Their formulation in skincare products aims to provide a milder yet effective approach to skin renewal, hydration, and protection, making them suitable for sensitive skin types.
