Polyfaasiset

Polyfaasiset is a theoretical construct used in set theory and knowledge representation to model objects with multiple contextual facets. The term combines elements meaning many and facets, signaling a structure where membership or properties can depend on the context considered.

A Polyfaasiset is defined as a pair (S, F) where S is a set and F = {F_i}_{i∈I} is a family of subsets of S called facets. For each i in I, F_i ⊆ S represents the i-th facet. The facet profile of an element x ∈ S is the boolean vector (1[x∈F_i])_{i∈I}, or equivalently a feature map m: S → {0,1}^I with m(x)_i = 1 if x ∈ F_i and 0 otherwise. Elements can belong to multiple facets, and facets may satisfy relations such as coverage or interdependencies.

Basic operations on a Polyfaasiset include facet-wise constructions. For a subcollection J ⊆ I, define the combined facet F_J = ∪_{i∈J} F_i and consider the projection of S onto J, which uses the subfamily {F_i}_{i∈J}. The polyfacial dimension of x can be defined as the number of facets containing x, i.e., the sum of m(x)_i over i ∈ I.

Example: Let S = {a, b, c} with facets F_1 = {a, b} and F_2 = {b, c}. The facet profiles are a → (1,0), b → (1,1), c → (0,1). This illustrates how membership is context-dependent across facets.

Applications and context: the concept appears in speculative discussions of multi-context information models, knowledge representation, and generalized topologies. It is not part of a single standard formal theory and is often presented as a framework for discussing context-dependent membership rather than a fixed axiomatization.
